FREDERIKSBERGGADE 2

Project description: Transformation /Retail and office

Location: Frederiksberggade 2, Copenhagen

Gross floor area: 4.030 m²

Year of construction: Under construction until 2025

Situated in Copenhagen’s historic inner city, the project redefines a protected 1899 corner building while retaining its original street façade. Behind this historic front, a new architectural composition unfolds, integrating contemporary spatial and structural principles. The program establishes retail functions across two connected lower floors, complemented by flexible office spaces above, each extending onto private terraces that open the building to its urban surroundings.

A new in-situ concrete framework engages with the preserved façade, characterized by a single primary column, ribbed concrete ceilings, and newly cast floor and roof slabs that articulate a rational and adaptable interior. The street façade has undergone careful restoration, distinguished by large brass pivot windows that reinterpret the building’s historic rhythm with a refined contemporary precision. The original tower’s copper cladding was dismantled, restored and renewed using traditional craftsmanship before being reinstalled, maintaining its material authenticity and historical continuity.

The interior detailing emphasizes precision and material integrity. Custom blackened steel staircases, executed with fine welded joints, intersect with surfaces of natural stone and textured cast concrete, forming a cohesive and tactile palette. This deliberate restraint in material expression merges craftsmanship with modern sensibility, creating spaces that are both enduring and understated.

With this renovation, which constitutes the “gateway” from the square Gammel Torv, the high street Frederiksberggade, will receive a significant quality boost as a catalyst for the rest of the regeneration of the shopping street.
